North St Catharines Walking Tour, Bunting St to Government Rd:

Duration: 30 minutes Difficulty: Easy going until the last 200 meters

By the time you've reached Bunting St. the route is starting to head out of St. Catharines. There are a few identifiers here but not many. Click on the map to jump to a description and picture for each item.

Lock 9 - 1921: It may seem a little strange today, but Lock 9 was located right beside Bunting St.

Bunting St. - Today: While difficult to photograph the route of the canal can still be identified by a small unexpected hill where it crossed bunting St.

Canal Route I: Another greenway magically appears just past Bunting St. It's not always clear why but it appears that builders were hesitant to build over part of the canal.

Queenston St. Swing Bridge - 1921: This was a pretty important bridge at one time, Queenston St. was a well established road that handled traffic between St. Catharines and Niagara on the Lake.

Queenston St. Swing Bridge - Today: It's gone. The photo at right looks across Queenston St. and along the route of the Third Welland Canal. While the old swing bridge is gone the road is still shaped the way Queenston St. was when abridge was required giving another clue of where the canal once went.

Lock 10 - 1921: Lock 10 can be seen in the photo at right. It was no longer used in 1933 and over the years it was filled in and buried. If you look for it today it's buried under part of Victoria Lawn Cemetery (section s-s)

Bollard depot: As you near Government Rd. the route crosses land owned by the St. Lawrence Management Corp. If you hunt around a bit, two bollards can be found nearby.

Canal Route II: Finally, just before reaching Government Rd. and ending our tour, The Canal suddenly reappears. The channel is visible in the picture running from left to right and away from the camera. Government Rd. and the Fourth Welland Canal are located just over the hill.
